Meet Chester
Meet
Chester! He is going to be my Diabetic Alert dog. We saw that he had the
potential while we were watching him for my cousin Madison. He started going
over by our other dog Oliver who is currently struggling with end stage
congestive heart failure he was licking his face and spinning around right
before Oliver passed out at first we thought he was causing him to pass out and
then we realized he was predicting that he was going to pass out; then he moved
on to scenting my low blood sugars randomly. Initially we thought it was a coincidental but
then he did it again and we realized he was trying to tell me something was
wrong. Chester soon started to kind of become attached to me thinking of me as
his person; following me around and being a “Velcro dog” a term used for dogs
who need constant attention and affection. Chester since then has started coming
in stores, library’s, and started basic manner training. He is doing a fantastic
job. He is going in stores like a pro, no barking, no accidents, and is a
complete gentleman. The only store I haven’t taken him in is Walmart… No dog
deserves that 😉! He is great in all the other stores he’s been
in Barns and Noble, Target, Ross, Vons, Gas stations, Post office, hobby lobby,
Michaels, sports clips, home goods, ulta, and he even went with me to get my
prom dress altered and in Claire’s to pick out the jewelry. Shortly after he started
scenting my low blood sugars my dad gave Madison’s mom; my Aunt Jilyn a phone
call explaining what Chester was doing. She then spoke to Madison; Chester’s
previous owner, about letting me keep Chester because he is my one shot at being
able to have a diabetic alert dog. Of course, she said I could keep him being
the amazing cousin she is. And I couldn’t have gotten to where I am with out
her. That was such an amazing and selfless thing to do to help me. I can’t
thank her enough. So that leads me to donations! I just wanted to give thanks to
a few people for helping me fund my Diabetic Alert Dog training! To get Chester
to be Chester the blood sugar tester, he will have to go into A LOT of
training. Madison adopted Chester from a shelter, in his first home he was
abused so he has special classes for that; he is currently taking starter class
to learn simple commands like sit, stay, and come. He then has to take an
intermediate, advanced, service dog , individual training classes and then
after all of that we start scent training. We will have to go to Utah to go to “Tattle
Tail scent dogs” to teach Chester how to alert me for blood sugar problems.
